About The Event

We are excited to welcome you to this inaugural event!  Kids in kindergarten to 12th grade who have learned this school year in local school programs how the chess pieces move and some basic strategy are welcome to enter the chess tournament, or to just come and engage in some chess activities with some local chess coaches.  The event is free for all, but for those able, a free will offering of $10 is encouraged to help cover costs.

Cue the details...

  • Check-in on site: 9:00-9:15am.
  • Tournament is from 9:30am to 12:30pm, and it will be four rounds (time control of 20 minutes per player).  All kids play in all the rounds (there is no "elimination").
  • There will be sections for 3rd Grade & Under, 5th Grade & Under, 8th Grade & Under, and 12th Grade & Under.  We reserve the right to combine sections based on turnout.
  • Children under 12 years old must have an adult present and responsible for them, unless the parent/guardian has the permission of the tournament director.
  • Light concessions will be available for sale to raise money for the Harriet Tubman School of Excellence chess program!
  • Parents may watch chess silently from the chess room, but not near the students' game.
  • Parking is free in the church lot.
  • Chess sets and clocks are provided for use in the tournament.
  • Trophies are provided to the top three finishers in each of the sections.  All players will get a chess keychain and certificate.
