About The Event
We want to create a safe and fun space where girls can improve in chess with other girls! Â They will hopefully not only improve their calculation skills, but also make friends to participate in Indy/Indiana's local tournaments together. Â Madison Brown (entering 7th grade, 1699 rating) and Laura Escobar (entering 8th grade, 1523 rating) have volunteered to teach group lessons for intermediate students this summer, supervised by Mike Chapuran, executive director of Indy Chess.
The group will meet on the eight Wednesdays from June 7 to July 26, sometimes in-person and sometimes virtually:
- Wednesday, June 7 - 6-8pm - In-person at St. Thomas Aquinas School (4600 N Illinois St, Indianapolis, 46208) with pizza
- Wednesday, June 14 - 6:45-8pm - Virtual on Zoom
- Wednesday, June 21 - 6:45-8pm - Virtual on Zoom
- Wednesday, June 28 - 6:45-8pm - Virtual on Zoom
- Wednesday, July 5 - 6:45-8pm - Virtual on Zoom
- Wednesday, July 12 - 6:45-8pm - Virtual on Zoom
- Wednesday, July 19 - 6:45-8pm - Virtual on Zoom
- Wednesday, July 26 - 6-8pm - In-person at St. Thomas Aquinas School (4600 N Illinois St, Indianapolis, 46208) with pizza
Participants should already know the basics of chess (e.g., how the pieces move, castling, en passant, etc.). Â These workshops are designed to focus on tactics for the intermediate female student, ages 7-13. Â Students do not have to be members of USCF or have a rating, but if they do, these workshops are best for students with rating 300-1000. Â Priority is given to girls who have played in a Scholastic Sunday tournaments with Indy Chess, often as the only female players in their section.
The first meeting will include icebreakers to help the girls get to know the coaches and each other, and will include a pizza dinner! Â The last meeting will include a simultaneous exhibition against the coaches (splitting the group by skill level), and will also include a pizza dinner and custom certificates for each girl!
Questions? Â Email Mike at info@indychess.org. Â Note: Membership in Indy Chess is not required to participate, but encouraged if your daughter plans to participate in future events like our Weekly Tuesday Chess Nights or Scholastic Sunday tournaments!
