​Thank you for your interest in the CYO Chess Team at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School!  We are volunteer Coaches Mike "Chap" Chapuran and Kevin Hoy, and we are excited to work with your kids on critical thinking, decision making, and sportsmanship through chess.  Coach Chap is an STA part-time music teacher and school parent, and founded Indy Chess in 2023.  Coach Hoy is a former child chess state champ, a former STA grandparent, and is married to a retired, long-time STA science teacher.

Practices are Wednesdays, August 26 to September 23, 2026 from 3:00 to 4:10pm in the Science Lab.  Students are dismissed straight to the chess program after school.  Please have your child bring a big snack to practices (they are HUNGRY after school).  They will be released to the main entrance (Door 2) at practice end where we'll see younger kids to their parents.

Matches are Wednesdays, September 30 to November 4, 2026 and start at 4:30pm.  There is no match October 14 during Fall Break.  Matches are all around Greater Indianapolis, sometimes 45 minutes away.  Kids change into uniforms after school, then meet the coaches after school on match days to warm up from about 3-3:45pm.  Then a caravan of parents shows up to take them to the matches at 3:45pm.  You are expected to pick your child up from the match about 5:45pm if you are not a chaperone that day.  Snack and chaperone volunteer signup will be shared with parents.

The huge (400+ kids) end-of-season tournament is Saturday, November 14, 2026 from 8:30am to 3:30pm at Lumen Christi School downtown.

Students in all grades are eligible to participate, but kinders need a parent present at matches.  The league cost is $54/student and will be direct billed by Ms. Knotts to your tuition account.  All equipment is provided.  If you need a new uniform shirt, order one here at cost (price includes shipping).  Questions?  Email Coach Chap at info@indychess.org.  Let's go Tigers!
